Scenic 340 Special Project Area
Location: Page and Warren counties Description: U.S. Route 340, which parallels the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, follows a travel corridor used by Native Americans for 13,000 years. The stretch that runs for about 20 miles from Front Royal to Luray is rich with historic and scenic lands that are enjoyed by travelers on public roadways and users of the South Fork of the Shenandoah, the Appalachian and Tuscarora Trails, George Washington National Forest, Shenandoah National Park, and the Skyline Drive. Rich and diverse wildlife habitat includes numerous Natural Heritage-identified sites and a critical wildlife travel corridor linking the SNP and GWNF. A portion of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River, which is a popular recreational resource, is eligible for Scenic River designation. The area also contains rich productive working lands, as well as numerous historic sites and structures from early American settlement and the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
