Since 1966, the Virginia Outdoors Foundation has partnered with thousands of landowners to conserve more than 825,000 acres of farmland, forests, and other open space for future generations, primarily through the use of open-space easements.
Recording an open-space easement or accepting a donation of land is just the first step to protection. The real work of conservation begins with the perpetual stewardship and management of that easement or gift of land.
With more than 4,000 conservation easements in its portfolio — more than any land trust in the nation — VOF has a highly trained and experienced stewardship staff. VOF staff collaborates with private landowners to ensure that the easement terms are upheld in perpetuity.
